Printed Greetings Cards - The Rise and Rise

The rise and rise of the Humble Christmas Card

How do you spread the festive cheer and give seasonal greetings in your business? Or amongst your friends and family?

Perhaps you are still sending Christmas cards, or maybe you have decided that ecards or texts, tweets and Facebook posts are more your thing?

Well despite our increasing progress towards a mainly digital existence, the humble Christmas Card is still very much alive and kicking.  And it’s not just the Christmas card, but cards for all occasions, thank you notes, postcards, printed invitations and much more!

The Greeting Card Association in the UK, reported in 2012 what a huge and successful industry it is, with nearly £1.38 billion spent on single cards over the year – which is more than we spend on tea and coffee altogether would you believe!  In fact, an average of 31 cards are being sent per person each year. Therefore despite a changeable economic climate, a rise in social media, and an increase in everything digital, the UK greeting card industry is healthy, vibrant and still a world leader.

The commercial Christmas card was invented in 1846 by Sir Henry Cole, the chief organizer of the Great Exhibition, pioneer of the penny post and founder of the V&A museum. One of Sir Henry’s first ever Christmas cards, which he sent to his Grandmother originally, was sold recently at auction and fetched a massive £22,500!

Greeting cards remain an important part of our social culture in the UK, as we like to mark important milestones and events with the sending of a beautiful, personal and carefully chosen greeting card.  And at Christmas, on top of bringing cheer, charities estimate that £50M is raised for good causes through the sales of charity Christmas cards.

So if you’re still a sender of cards, you’ll appreciate that high quality printing and paper, finishing, and the personal touch are crucial to a beautiful card.  At Foundry Press their professionalism, quality and attention to detail are second to none, and they use only FSC approved paper.  Perhaps they could make you some personalized cards for your next event or celebration?
