How to choose a GREEN PRINTER in Sussex - Part 2: Paper

  • Printers use a lot of paper.
  • Paper comes from trees.
  • Trees are a crucial part of our ecosystem.

I’m stating the obvious I know. But I think in today’s society of consumerism, we too often don’t think about where are goods come from, or the effect that producing them has had on the planet.

If you want to do your bit for the environment on your next print project, ensure that the printer you choose is FSC approved.

Foundry Press, a green printer in West Sussex, is 1 of only 260 green printers in the UK who are FSC approved and accredited. FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, which is an organization that works to promote the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. Any FSC paper is only sourced from responsibly managed forests (virgin fibre) or is recycled.

But what does ‘responsibly managed forests’ actually mean?

The forests are managed by representatives from: community forestry groups, environmental and social groups, the paper industry, the timber trade, indigenous people’s organisations, the forestry profession, and forest product certification organisations.

These groups ensure that wildlife habitat is protected. FSC is the only certification system supported by the following environmental organisations: Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Woodland Trust, World Wildlife Fund, and the Rain Forest Alliance.

In order for a company to carry the FSC logo, there needs to be inspection and auditing of the land from which the timber and pulpwood originate, and tracking of it through all the steps of the production process until it reaches the end user. This is termed the ‘chain of custody’.

Which paper should you chooose?

It’s up to you! There are four standard FSC certification labels. One indicates that the product is sourced from 100 percent well-managed sources and another verifies that the paper is recycled. Two other labels indicate that the product came from mixed sources, either from well-managed forests alone or from a mixture of well-managed forests and recycled materials.

Using FSC paper for your printing is an effective way to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability. Why don’t you or your company pledge for a greener world and choose FSC for your next project?
